“Cultural appropriation is the adoption or theft of icons, rituals, aesthetic standards, and behavior from one culture or subculture by another. It generally is applied when the subject culture is a minority culture or somehow subordinate in social, political, economic, or military status to the appropriating culture. This “appropriation” often occurs without any real understanding of why the original culture took part in these activities or the meanings behind these activities, often converting culturally significant artifacts, practices, and beliefs into “meaningless” pop-culture or giving them a significance that is completely different/less nuanced than they would originally have had.”

hell yeah! I’m so glad you made this. that workshop yesterday was awesome!
Here’s an awesome zine to download and read. For anyone who needs an explanation why dressing up like Native Americans or explanations of why it’s oppressive to take things from other cultures w/o permission, this is a read for you.
It occurred to me the other day that it would be good to have a way of collating websites that provide good resources on original texts on philosophical and political writings. It’s not the same as having the book in hand but if there’s an easy way to get a copy of something without having to spend money on it then I’m all for it.
I’ll try and keep this up to date so if people want to reply or reblog with suggestions then I can keep a track on it and keep the original post updated as well. (My awareness of anarchist resources isn’t so good so I’m sure some people will be able to contribute more towards that end. I’d also love it if people have resources on feminism, LGBT and PoC struggles. Capitalists need not apply)
Please do share as well :)
Marxists Internet Archive - Good archive for texts by Marxists including people such as Rosa Luxemburg, Antonio Gramsci and some more obscure names along with the big ones (well … Marx, Lenin, Trotsky etc)
LibCom - Libertarian Communists (so fairly anarchist friendly) resource. Worth doing a search if you’re looking for something specific. Also updates with articles on contemporary happenings if you go to the main page.
The Anarchist Library - Anarchist version of Marxists Internet Archive, made by someone better at coding websites. (blogged byagoristmike)
Project Gutenberg - Project dedicated to getting out-of-copyright works into PDF format and distributing them. Not just philosophy and politics but is brilliant at finding free copies of texts. Novels as well as source books so use the search function.
eBooks 3000 - Database of PDFs of books. Includes more modern stuff as well, but all written word. Worth giving a search, may be useful for books still in print.
Biblioteca Ayacucho - (a Spanish language resource) has many books available for download, ranging from classical latinamerican literature to political writings of all times and also a few historical documents. (thanks to allegrotranquilo)
Amazon Classics - Amazon has a lot of books available for Kindle* and quite a lot of the out-of-copyright works you can download for free so it’s worth giving this resource a search if you’re looking for something (also contains fiction if you’re interested in old fiction novels). This linked page also has some further links to book archives that may be worth checking out.
* “But I don’t have a Kindle!?” I hear you say. You can get an app to read Kindle files, for pc (here), for mac (here) and also for Android, iPhone and iPad if you go to the bottom of the Kindle listing (here). No purchase necessary. May differ if you’re not in the U.K. but I’d imagine the principle is the same if the web address slightly different.
http://library.nu/ has a fair number of good books to download for free

so my landlord is still persona incognita…he put a deadbolt on the door of the studio and so much of my stuff is locked inside. and everytime we try to contact him, he says he is not in cairo, but will be back in 10 days.
rage.
which leaves me in an odd place in terms of the studio itself. well, after some reflection, i am going to carry on with the project of water studio and let the physical space (where i can create, and store, and offer and display and invite) appear when it does.
so…the next steps.
1. water studio tumblr will start featuring zines and downloadable books, pdf’s, etc. that reflect well, good, interesting stuff to read, look at, listen to. including my own zines. and art and lit from cairo.
2. water studio will become a more mobile unit, consisting of my laptop, my blackberry, and my soon to be purchased motobike.
